Dungeons and Dragons

I, like many gamers, cut my teeth on Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. I got playing about 10 years ago, though I had a gap in there when my mother found out about my "evil hobby". My first characters were a human Mage and a Human Fighter whose names I never knew. We played in Andy Nuxoll's dining room, and I remember being hooked... despite the fact that my mage put more PC's to sleep than Xvarts, and I had no clue as to what dice to roll at any given moment. Hey, nobody's perfect.

These are some articles that I've posted, mostly on the TSR message boards, about AD&D. Note that many of these are still rough works. I haven't really cleaned them up for production, so they have all the attendant spelling errors and grammar mutiliations.

Third Edition Articles

With an increase of Third Edition articles filling my hard drive, I decided its time to split the 2nd and 3rd edition articles into their respective camps. This should keep things a bit more sane on the page, and allow my 2nd edition articles to sink into obscurity as people ignore the old ways of doing things.

-The first of my articles on Third Edition, this one creates an alternate system of psionics, as well as a review of the Official Psionics Handbook, with commentary by Bruce Cordell!
--More Third Edition wackiness, this time about Wizards and Healing.
-Two Sided Campaigns can be great fun, especially if you like to be an evil DM.
--New Domains for clerics in 3e are stored here.
-A new method of handling Metamagic, as opposed to the one offered in the PH.
--A review of the Players Handbook that I posted on EN World

Third Edition Characters

-Drujjt the One-Handed is a Paladin of Tyr, in the world of the Forgotten Realms. I was playing him in a PBP game, but that fell apart.
--Ghoruk Ulkrunnar was a half-orc barbarian who found himself stranded in human lands, faced with a foe that threatened to destroy his orcish tribe. Unfortunately, he was cut down in an early confrontation with a thieves' guild in Arabel.
-Zerek Half-Elven was a character I never got to play, a bastard son of a Sembian merchant's wife.
--Azzedar Kassur is a young Thayan wizard, just set out into the world and still uncertain of the idea of "good".
-Mourn Eveningfall is an elf, formerly of Sembia, now wandering due to some youthful indiscretions.

Second Edition Characters

-Cormac was once a Druid, but found himself better suited to being a Bard. He has written an epic poem about one of his adventures, which is available here. While he didn't write it, here is something he might have written, about the forces of the Dales taking Scardale back from Lashan.
--Bern Steelhammer is a dwarven fighter who has found his kinship to the Gods, and was my character in a PBEM Forgotten Realms campaign, until an unfortunate encounter with a mind-flayer cut his career short.
-Zeren is the character I made to replace Bern, and is somewhat of a twist on Bern's fighter/psionicist training.
--"Kapp" is the short form of a gnome bard I have in yet another game.
--Averfin Steeleye is my younger brother Ryan's character in a game he was in. Let him know what you think.
--Another character of my brother's, Verdanic Blue-eye.
-Still another character history from my brother, this one about 20 pages in Word. His name is Glynnon, and he's had a long, hard life for one so young. Here also is the party contract that Glynnon enforced within the Knights of Bloodstone.
--Averian Shadowstep is Ryan's character in the PBEM with Bern.
-'Zek is a Varanid Ranger with a very angry attitude.

Second Edition Essays and Rules

--Alignment, that perennial bane of Dungeon Masters, is covered at this link
-My own special rules for character creation are over here
--I've always liked the Generic Cleric. Find out why over here.
-I made up some variant rules for high-powered crossbows in AD&D. You can find them here
--Dwarves are non-magical, true, but sometimes even they want a little magical back-up. Find out their answer.
-It seems to me that falls should involve a little bit more than just a few hit points of damage. When your players next go tree-diving, try out a few of these painful tricks.
--Being the ever-busy fiddler, I altered the opposition schools for all the new varieties of magic introduced in Spells and Magic. Try these new opposition schools.
-I've come up with two different spell point systems, one based on the SAGA rules system, the other based off Player's Option system.
--Tired of your Core Rules proficiencies taking forever to go up, and being too expensive to increase, anyway? Try out this.
-The powers of Athasian priests are organized in ways foreign to priests of other worlds. In order to make certain classes more comfortable for me, I've altered their spheres.
--I've never really liked TSR's parrying rules, since they don't seem to do as well to express the skill of the defender as I would like. So, I made up my own. Also included is a quicky system for using Dexterity to aid in hitting things.
-With a race that naturally flies, aerial combat on Athas can become a big thing. These rules will help reduce the hassle of it while deep in the desert... or anywhere else, for that matter.
--Bloodsilver is a precious commodity on the world of Birthright. What happens if it resurfaces?
-Lesser Dopplegangers are a race option I developed for the WotC message boards.

Of course, the place to go for AD&D is always going to be the Official Dungeons and Dragons Website. If you want more information on what you can and cannot do with TSR products on the Web, go to their Online Policy
