Just for clarification, this is something I posted on ShadowRN, to explain my philosophy about how to post on the Internet.

The Internet is two things. First of all, it's a wonderful vehicle for delivering pornography. We have one guy in our gaming group who insists that its not the internet if it doesn't have pornography. Secondly, though, it is largely a text-based medium. While we can do a lot with the visual arts (referencing back to that first point), its very difficult to carry on a conversation with them. Thus, we use text.

Now then, in a text-based medium, how you write is how you are perceived, much like how you dress affects how you are perceived in Real Life. Some people dress quite well, and you can always tell that they take care in their appearance, while some are somewhat more casual. Others dress somewhat poorly, but you can tell that its because they're not used to the local fashion. And, quite frankly, some people dress like a 3 dollar crack-whore.

With regards to text, the analogy carries through. Some people take special care that their words are spelled correctly and their grammar is good, while others are a bit more casual about it, with occasional misspellings or weird grammar. Some folk aren't used to English, so their posts generally look a bit weird, but they're still understandable, and don't stick out nearly as badly as most of us would trying to converse in their language. And, frankly, there are people who talk like a three-dollar crack whore... they pay no attention to spelling, grammar, punctuation, or other such things that present them in a good light.

Accordingly, I tend to treat each type of writer differently. Those who write formally, I tend to treat more formally, while those who write casually are treated a little casually, but with some respect. For those who don't speak the language fluently, I usually try hard to understand what they're trying to say, simply because I know I wouldn't sound nearly so fluent if I was expected to write in German or Latin (the only two I can manage at this point). The last group, however, I ignore or I mock. Quite frankly, I have no intention of indulging people who insist on dressing like a crack whore, and I feel no inhibitions against making fun of them. If you don't care enough about what you say to make it look decent, why should I give a flying fornication into a rolling donut about it?
