PPE and the Mundane

Ok, we know that most of a person's PPE is burned off during adolescence. However, it is till useful in some situations after that. Rather than burn it permanently in the acquisition in new skills, a character can, in times of crisis, call upon his inner reserves to do great things. Instances where people have lifted wagons off a trapped child, or miraculously made the throw that won them the Lopan Olympics are instances of this at work.

Generally, people can use one point of PPE to add +1 to a combat roll, +1/2 to an attribute, or +5% to a skill for the space of time that it takes to use that skill (be it one attack for a bonus to hit, five minutes for lifting a car, or two hours for a Research skill). This point is not permanently used, can be regained normally, and represents their extremely deep focus on their work. Normally, people are limited to a number of PPE equal to one half of their level, rounded up, each day (time between sleeps). Magicians, with their greater control over their PPE, can use as much as they wish, and psychics can use twice as much as normal people per day. Also, the clinically insane can sometimes use more. manic-depressives in their Manic stage, phobics attempting to flee their phobia, and obsessives directly persuing their obsession can use up as much of their PPE as they wish (and are likely to burn it all rather quickly). After using this, a character is mentally and physically exhausted from that level of concentration. For a period of time equal to (the length of the action) times (the number of PPE points used), the character is going to be -10% (or -2) on all actions, and will seek out sleep if at all possible.
