I recently made a character who was, statistically speaking, a Priest of Light. However, the character concept was that of a demi-god (the daughter of Od), who viewed herself as a mercenary warrior. I realized, however, that the Priest of Light OCC really doesn't accomodate this character concept. So, I made my character according to the rules the book described, but then wrote up these alterations to the usual Priest of Light OCC, to provide a few more jobs for player characters who wish to be priests.
Warrior-Priest OCC
While a Travelling Priest is the most common form of adventuring
clergy, perhaps the next most common is the Warrior-Priest. These
Priests combine strength of arms with a dauntless faith in order to
spread the word of their God and perform great deeds in their
name. They also lead the armies of the faithful in times of war,
or take up arms in service of secular lords, serving as chaplains for
armies on the move.
While many pantheons have Warrior-Priests in their service, they are particularly common in the Sect of Rurga, Church Tolmeti, the Church of Light and Dark, the Northern Religion, the Sect of the Red God, and Dragonwright.
Scholar-Priest
Not all priest fare bravely off into the jaws of certain doom Many spend their entire lives doing battle with ancient manuscripts, barely legible handwriting, and peer review boards. Occasionally, these priests will fare out into the world on information-gathering expeditions, or spend long periods of time involved in exploring the natural sciences. Although these priests often resemble the Scholar Monks (from Old Ones), but they are as much priests as their brethren who wield sword and spell in defense of their church, and do not necessarily share their pacifism.
Good Pantheons for Scholar-Priests: Sect of Aco and the Juggernaut (especially Aco), Church of Light and Dark (especially Thoth), Dragonwright, and some few devoted to Epim and Belimar of the Northern Pantheon.A Magician-Priest stands between two disciplines, dedicated to
supporting his Gods causes through the use of magic. These priests not
only make use of the magic that their God has provided for them, but
also actively seek it out. Each Magician-Priest has a specialty in one
of the forms of magic which has survived the Millennium of Purification
(Wizardry, Diabolism, and Summoning), and what they learn add to their
God's store of knowledge. Though not as capable as full Men of
Magic, they bring the powers of the gods to bear on every spell they
cast and every ward they carve.
Race: In order to be a magician-priest, one must be capable of taking the class upon which your magic is based. This usually limits magician-priests to humans, elves, gnomes, kobolds, ogres, trolls, changelings, wolfen, and coyles. Note that dwarves are physically capable of becoming these classes, but simply have not for thousands of years; thus, the magician-priest O.C.C. is open to them, and is one of the few ways in which they may practice magic.
