Bishop

One has always been different from those around one. One was always stronger, faster, smarter than one's den-mates, always able to see into the Bright Shining World and speak with those that lived there. When one was a cub, one was always ahead of one's den-mates, and was cub-Alpha by general assent. Before one's second Winter, one was Beta amongst the males of one's pack, and all knew that one would become Alpha. Soon after one's third Winter, one became so, earning the right to mate.

One's cubs came in early spring, and one knew that they were to be great. They were so small, yet possessed so much wisdom. Especially, one saw intelligence in the one who had a coat much like one's own. That one's eyes shone like the Sky Mother, holding wisdom beyond what a cub should, and seeing into the Bright Shining World.

One's fourth winter was harsh, and one's pack could not find food that was good, only the flesh of beasts that saw the Bright Shining World and had bites that burned one's blood, or smelled to my pack more of death than of food. One's pack grew smaller and smaller, until only this one and this one's cub remained. As the cub prepared to leave the World of Darkness and Light to forever dwell in the Bright Shining World, one spoke with that one in the Bright Shining World, telling that one of his passage, how the part that lived in the World of Darkness and Light would become one with the grass and trees.

"But what, sire," that one asked, "of the part of one that lives in the Bright Shining World?"

One answered, "That part lives amongst the trees, to guide those ones who see the Bright Shining World."

"One would like that, one thinks." One's cub then stood in the Bright Shining World, shook like freeing oneself of water, then walked away amongst the trees. One's own howls echoed across the silent snow, slowly changing in tone and pitch. When one stopped for breath, one looked down at one's forepaws, and ones new howl was cut short. One's forepaws were those of a man-thing!

In fear and confusion, one called out to those who live in the Bright Shining World. One walked from amongst the trees, the spirit of one's own cub. One was relieved to see one one knew.

"Teacher from the Bright Shining World," one said, "how is it that one now appears as a man-thing?"

"One was born as such; a creature of two worlds and three forms. When one wishes, one may walk as a wolf, or as a man-thing, or as That Which is Between, which is as a wolf that walks like a man-thing, with a man-thing's forepaws."

"This one thanks you, Teacher from the Bright Shining World," one said, as is the custom, but the Teacher from the Bright Shining World did not leave. When one asked why, the Teacher from the Bright Shining World spoke.

"As one who was once your cub, one would provide further service. One should, each Winter, visit the dens of the man-things, to learn their ways and their speech, so one does not suffer so from the cold. Be well, sire." With that, one's cub left, disappearing amongst the trees of the Bright Shining World.

Alone, one traveled to the dens of the man-things, staying amongst them through the cold, moving towards the Home of the Sky Father at the cold's leaving, never hurrying, avoiding the territories of other packs. After three Winters, one came to the man-thing den called "Denver" and again felt the call for a pack, as one had many times in the past three cycles of Winter. One entered the den of Denver, and smelled the wildness in the winds of the World of Darkness and Light, saw the changing shades in the sky of the Bright Shining World, and was comforted. One has learned that, in times of wildness and change, the man-things also seek packs. One hopes to find a pack soon. There is no greater punishment for a wolf than to be alone.
